about
Notes: The Civil War was not so much about slave ownership (which Lincoln condoned) as it was expansion of slavery from the democrat-controlled South into new western territory, a concept which was abhorred by most of the North. Indeed, most of those southern soldiers didn’t even own slaves, but claimed the Constitution was on their side. Lincoln felt the Founding Fathers had the slaves in mind, and that it would work itself out as circumstances permitted, which it did, but in a bloody way.
lyrics
It was the cloud of smoke from the cannon
The deluded cry of war
That broke the peace of my mountain home
On the bloody road to Shiloh
They commandeered my horse
And slaughtered my pigs and my cows
To feed the troups that were headin’ North
On the bloody road to Shiloh
They tore me from my fields
And away from the woman that I loved
And my children asked what could I be doin’
On the bloody road to Shiloh
We were young and divided
A nation misguided by the war
My feet were wrapped in rags
Blistered for more than a week
My canteen filled with tainted water
On the bloody road to Shiloh
I knew my brother beside me
And the black man pullin’ the shot
And the friend of mine on the other side
Of the bloody road to Shiloh
We were young and divided
A nation misguided by the war
